Australian floating solar innovator Sunengy has completed its first pilot plant in India on a hydropower storage dam owned by The Tata Power Co Ltd, India’s largest private utility.
Sunengy is the first solar company in the world to propose and implement floating solar collectors designed specifically for large-scale use in hydro-electric dams and other still water bodies.
The Liquid Solar Array (LSA) is the brainchild of Australian scientist and engineer Mr Phil Connor who is co-founder, executive director and CTO of Sunengy. ‘LSA has the potential to be the most rapidly deployable solar technology in the world’ Mr Connor said. ‘It’s unique and specific design as a hybrid for existing hydropower facilities can make the quantum leap towards higher use of renewable energy so desired by many. Hydropower produces nearly 17% of global electricity and is by far the largest generator of renewable energy, but is limited by available water resources. LSA adds solar as a secondary resource and taps directly into the underutilised transmission grids at hydropower storage dams, with the hydropower turbines providing full backup for the solar power. This gives tremendous potential to dramatically increase the energy generation capacity of many of the world’s hydro facilities without straining additional water resource, or occupying any land area. In fact it will allow for improved water resource management and better energy security’. It also avoids additional Right of Way issues for power evacuation. The load factor of existing power evacuation facility can be improved.
The 90 prototypes installed are an evolution on design of units independently tested by CSIRO at its Energy Centre in Newcastle, Australia. Phil Connor is very pleased with the results given that from LSA’s original proof of concept to the pilot’s completion has been achieved from a budget of only AU$2,000,000.
Connor said ‘the Indian Pilot installation of the LSA-CPV system has demonstrated that such a high concentration system does work effectively floating on a raft in a working hydroelectric dam. The sun-tracking system works well, with only occasional glitches due to the financial constraints on the system build. The power output from the units is very good under clear conditions but some limitations have been observed in the hazy conditions typical in India (where blue light is much reduced). CPV systems are significantly affected by poor air quality, reducing output up to 40% at certain times. Of course any limitations such as this are a significant part of the purpose of a pilot site; to determine if there are any issues that may need addressing and to discover the best way to resolve them. There has also been an unexpected development in that while observing some of the difficulties with the CPV system specific to the hazy conditions in India, Connor said that ‘this is where the idea of a second product LSA-“PV” using silicon flat plate PV and a water–borne tracker was developed. These issues of poorer air quality and cloud cover will not be significant for our second product.’
The Indian pilot prototypes also used a 0.92 m² Fresnel lens, with a low efficiency of 70%. The finished production unit will have a 1.2m² Fresnel lens with efficiency of over 80%, which will lead to an output of 230W per unit’.
Sunengy co-founder, chairman and executive director of business development Mr Peter Wakeman said ‘Taking four LSA prototypes from a test pool at a CSIRO facility (the Australian federal government’s premier research organisation) to installing ninety units in a hydro-electric dam in India was a big step but we are very pleased with the outcome. Tata Power has been a supportive partner during this development process and has also designed and erected the power evacuation. We are very pleased to have delivered significantly more advanced technology than originally anticipated by Tata Power’.
‘Development capital is very much the determining factor in the level of technology achievement in our case’ Wakeman said ‘some solar development companies have spent ten or more times the amount of capital to get to a first pilot completion. We have mastered working on what has really been a shoestring budget to get to where we are now.’
The rapid fall in the cost of traditional flat plat PV modules over the past three years has made it increasingly difficult for concentrated PV technologies to remain viable.
Sunengy has developed a second floating solar design that incorporates traditional modules and the innovation is captured within their current patent.
Connor said ‘Concentrators need bright sunlight to be economically viable and there are plenty of regions in the world that enjoy good solar resources. However, many heavily populated regions do not have as good an air quality or are in more cloudy regions. Our LSA “PV” design will suit these areas very well and we can leverage the low cost of PV modules, with our unique patented tracking technology’.

Current LSA “CPV” and “PV” prototypes now need to go through production engineering phases to be released as mass producible products.
LSA “PV” will require AU$1,200,000 and nine months to be ready for market release and LSA “CPV” will require AU$2,400,000 and eighteen months to achieve the same.
Sunengy’s business plan is to get the “PV” product into the market first given the lesser capital and timeline; then move into final development of the “CPV” product.

Indian trial of a unique Australian solar system will move it towards full production
Australian solar power company Sunengy Pty Limited has entered into a partnership with India’s largest integrated private power utility, Tata Power that will allow it build a pilot plant for its low-cost, floating-on-water, solar technology in India by the end of this year.
Sunengy Chairman and Executive Director of Business Development, Peter Wakeman, said that Tata Power, a flagship company of Tata Group, has partnered with Sunengy for its interest in its patented Liquid Solar Array (LSA) technology. Mr Wakeman said the deal was significant for the future use of solar globally because it allows Sunengy to demonstrate the practicality of its technology in one of the world’s most promising solar power markets.
The LSA was invented by Phil Connor, Sunengy Executive Director and Chief Technology Officer and a passionate advocate for solar power for 45 years. Mr Connor said that when located on and combined with hydroelectric dams, LSA provides the breakthroughs of reduced cost and ‘on demand’ 24/7 availability that are necessary for solar power to become widely used. The LSA uses traditional Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) technology – a lens and a small area of solar cells that tracks the sun throughout the day, like a sunflower. Floating the LSA on water reduces the need for expensive supporting structures to protect it from high winds. The lenses submerge in bad weather and the water also cools the cells which increases their efficiency and life-span. According to Mr Connor, hydropower supplies 87 percent of the world’s renewable energy and 16 percent of the world’s power but is limited by its water resource. He said an LSA installation could match the power output of a typical hydro dam using less than 10 percent of its surface area and supply an additional six to eight hours of power per day. Modelling by Sunengy shows, for example, that a 240 MW LSA system could increase annual energy generation at the Portuguese hydro plant, Alqueva, by 230%. “LSA effectively turns a dam into a very large battery, offering free solar storage and opportunity for improved water resource management,” Mr Connor said. “LSA needs no heavy materials or huge land acquisitions and is effectively cyclone proof,” he said. “If India uses just one percent of its 30,000 square kilometers of captured water with our system, we can generate power equivalent to 15 large coal-fired power stations.”
Mr Banmali Agrawala, Executive Director, Tata Power said “In our quest to deliver sustainable energy, Tata Power is consistently investing in clean and eco-friendly technologies. We have partnered with Sunengy, Australia for a pilot plant in India, which is concentrated photovoltaic solar technology that floats on water. This nascent technology will be demonstrated in the natural environment; it utilises the water surface for mounting and does not compete with land that can be used for other purposes.”
Mr Wakeman said that the primary market for LSA is the provision of industrial scale electricity via hydropower facilities. Other markets include mining sites as well as villages and remote communities reliant on diesel power generators.
